Palette knife applying glossy acrylic paint on a matte black canvas in an attic studio space

Somnia: Sinking Into the Unseen

There is a precise moment in the studio when planning ends and immersion takes over.

Today in the attic, under the soft 12 o’clock light and the quiet rhythmic tap of rain against the window, the blueprint met the paint. Armed with a brush, a palette knife, and raw intention, I began laying down the dark layers onto the canvas.

Watching high-gloss acrylic cut through the velvety depth of matte black is hypnotic. Depending on how the light catches the surface—and the angle from which you stand—the composition shifts. This piece isn’t flat or static; it’s designed to be experienced from three distinct perspectives, revealing different textures, reflections, and hidden structures as you move around it.

It mirrors the concept of Somnia itself: that gradual, inevitable descent into the deep slumber world. Sinking below the surface of the conscious mind into something vast, dark, and still.

This isn’t about escaping reality—it’s about carving out a space within it. Taking control of the medium, trusting the rhythm of the blade and the brush, and shaping the darkness on my own terms.
